Outokumpu Stainless, Finland
Intelligent revamp concepts like those we have implemented at Outokumpu in Finland are equally marked by excelling engineering achievements. We extended the Steckel mill and ancillary equipment units such as to enable production to be raised from 0.8 to 1.7 million tons of stainless special steel strip and to allow the strip quality to be improved at the same time. The extension of the Steckel mill by three four-high finishing stands was the core issue of this revamp. With a view to minimizing the shutdown periods, the mill stands were assembled beforehand alongside the mill line on a foundation block of a length of 26 m and a width of 6 m. Following this, the unit weighing 2,500 tons was pulled smoothly into the prepared foundation pit of the mill line, aligned and secured.
