In a class of its own
5-m heavy plate mill for Baosteel. As the head of a consortium, we built one of the world’s most modern and high-performance heavy plate mills for Baosteel in the PR China. It is designed for quality plate with thicknesses of 5 to 150 mm (up to 400 mm in stage 2) and widths from 900 to 4,900 mm. The ingenious mill configuration and the use of state-of-the-art technologies ensure high productivity and excellent production flexibility. Once the plant has been completed, it will reach an annual capacity of 1.8 million t. Included in our supply scope were plant design, construction of the mechanical equipment and core elements of the automation. The key components were manufactured in our shops. Furthermore, our integrated service package covered supervision of erection, commissioning and training of customer’s staff.
Size matters. Not only the almost 5-meter-wide plates, but also the plant itself impress with dimensions that are out of the ordinary. The buildings and bays cover an area of 200,000 m². During construction, 300,000 m³ of earth was excavated and 200,000 m³ of concrete was used. The plant equipment installed has a total weight of 45,500 t and the steel structures add up to 47,000 t. The facility requires a total of 160,000 kW of electricity, and the maximum water circulation can reach up to 50,000 m³ per hour.
The Baosteel heavy plate mill consists of:
- Walking beam furnaces, bogie hearth furnace
- Four-high reversing mill stand, equipped with CVC® plus technology, hydraulic roll adjustment, segmented work roll cooling
- Edger with hydraulic edger roll adjustment
- Cooling section with a combination of spray cooling (SCS Spray Cooling System) and laminar cooling (ACC Accelerated Cooling System)
- Hot leveler
- Cooling and inspection beds
- Shear line including cropping shear, double trimming shear and cross-cutting shear
- Cold plate leveler
- Heat treatment
- Measuring systems and marking equipment within the process line
- X-Pact® automation package for profile and flatness, cooling and levelers

- Soaking pits for hot charging
